So my husband, our 7m old baby and I just came from shopping at the Target up the street. We were getting ready to call a uber home after a nice night out through downtown Chicago. WE ran across this Panda Express that I thought we could get food from and wait for our ride. We were in there for less than 30 seconds before an older Asian lady followed us to the back section where proceeded to yell at me in front of my baby about how we can't sit back there because the store was about to close and she was about to begin mopping. I calmly told her I understand but simply asked if it would be ok if we could wait for 5 minutes for our ride to pull up so my baby, more than myself and my husband, wouldn't have to wait out in the cold. She ignored my request saying "No you sit over there", referring to the front part of the store where all the seats were taken and other mothers had their strollers parked as well. I pointed out that where she was directing us had no seats available. I said, "but there are no seats over there", and she cut me off saying " I don't care if there is seat or no seat, you sit over there." At this point my husband had to calm me down reminding me that our ride was pulling up. It was hurtful how she talked to me and I was just trying to keep my baby warm while we waiting for a ride. I wasn't going to spend my money there after being talked to like a peasant in front of my family. I have great appreciation for other peoples cultures, and I hate to say it but being the only black customers in the restaurant and my husband having a face covering on, I can't help but feel targeted. It's like I went to panda express to get disrespected in front of my family for free. When I did get my ride I went to chipotle where I was treated with respect. This experience left me feeling hurt and confused as to why the conversation went in this direction instead of things being more kindly expressed.
