I happened to be in Brooklyn the other day, and stumbled across Soboku. Located in South Slope, the restaurant signage was modern and hip. There was a good amount of seats on the inside and by the windows. A bit dark inside but the interior was nicely done. Japanese city pop classics from the 80s like Matsubara Miki’s “Stay With Me” played in the background. Loved it. Spicy Tuna Taco ($12) I really didn’t know what to expect when I saw this, but had to try this out of curiosity. Four tacos drizzled with spicy mayo and spring onions on the top as garnish came out. The tuna was very fresh and soft. The spicy kick delivered but it didn’t burn my tongue. The fried gyoza skin was a great stand-in for corn tortillas. Crab Meat Korokke ($10) I consider korokke or croquettes as one of the great fried Japanese foods because of the different textured the food delivers from crunchy to soft, and the wide variety of fillings that can go with it. This time it was creamy crab meat. The korokke was filled with it, endowing savory and sweet flavors. Combined with the tartar sauce, this was a joy to eat. Ebi Katsu Burger ($20) Katsu burgers are one of my favorite foods. This burger had a shrimp katsu as the patty with copious amounts of shrimp chunks inside. The shredded cabbage added a crunch factor that made each bite a joy to partake. The tartar and sweet/sour sauces gave that extra mile to the burgers. Tater tots was a delicious side that went along great with the burger. Oyakodon ($16) Oyakodon is often considered a comfort food because it is warm, hearty, and all around delicious. This oyakodon came with lots of chicken chunks, onions, and egg simmered in a broth, then poured over rice. It wasn’t salty at all — perfect for my palate. It provided for a hearty meal! Highly recommended!

Very happy I decided to stop in and peek at the menu. This is a fantastic little Japanese restaurant with unique menu that includes items like a breaded shrimp fried burger. And yes, I had to try it. The Edi Katsu Burger comes with shredded cabbage and tartar style sauce with a side of tater tots. This was my first time trying a shrimp burger and I was very a happy with my choice. I would prefer fries or something more authentic over tots. The table service was quick and very helpful. The restaurant has dimmed lighting so be prepared to pull out your cell phones flashlight to read the menu if you are in the same boat as me and may require glasses but refuse to wear them. ;). Overall very happy with my dinner selection at this cozy spot in Brooklyn

Favorite neighborhood katsu spot. Must get their horse mackerel katsu - such a sleeper item. Their burger and tots are super good too!

Well executed dishes with great flavor and prices. The chicken katsu and curry (4/5) was delicious, moist, and well fried. However, the real star here was the salmon sashimi dish (5/5) - holy cow it's delicious. The salmon is luscious, buttery, and extremely well flavored with shoyu or whatever magic they're putting in there. They don't give you much but I treasured every morsel.

Such a cozy spot for a delicious meal. Everything was absolutely delicious. Their crab meat croquette was super unique in taste and a must get. Their curry is so delicious and savory. The cuts of meat whichever you get, is cooked perfectly. I got the chicken cutlet and the chicken wasn’t dry at all. Not to mention, their curry dishes are under $20!

I recently visited Soboku and let me tell you, our experience was amazing. Every single dish got better and better. We ordered a number of things: Kurobuta Katsu Kare Salmon Carpaccio Sweet Potato Tempura Gyu Don Iced Matcha Latte & Drunken Whale Sake. Totally recommend these dishes. We’re itching to go back asap

The food and service were terrible, and the Sake was incredibly overpriced. My chicken katsu was chewy and didn't have any flavor, and the staff was rude and dismissive throughout the meal. I was incredibly disappointed and won't be returning here again.

This is such a great spot to spend time with friends! The service is excellent, and the ambiance is incredibly cozy. We enjoyed garlic edamame paired with beer, which was incredibly savory. The crab cream korokke was exceptionally creamy. Truly a rare find in this area. Salmon carpaccio is always my top choice! I make it a point to order this every time I visit. Additionally, the salmon donburi and Geso karaage looked very tempting. My forever favorite dish, the Hambagu Burger, was so soft and tender. I'll definitely be returning soon!
