Beware of overcharging at Selam Kitchen/Restaurant. I was with my friend for dinner at Selam Kitchen last Sunday. They overcharged us $24.99 for a vegetarian order that is $17.99 (~40% overcharged). Additionally, they applied a 25% higher charge for meat orders. I won’t be returning, as we felt cheated. It was a disappointing the experience.

Great experience. This restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere with great music . Nothing fancy but very welcoming! The owner is super friendly and happy to explain the menu and make recommendations. The food was incredible. We can’t wait to go back.

Place looks a little rune down but ignore that the food is really great and a good price. We shared a plate for one and it was definitely enough food for two. She forgot part of our order but it was for the best as we were already full

This is by far the best Ethiopian food I’ve ever had. Ive never been so excited by vegetables. The meat was excellent too. Hands down the best in the city.

Just visited this place for the first time last night; we ordered a vegan combo, which arrived quickly and was very tasty. There were a few dishes in the platter that are also served at Demera, their nearby competitor, so I was able to compare and contrast. I found the gomen less flavorful and the ye misir wot oddly sweet, but the kik alicha was on point and I vastly preferred Selam's ye shimbra assa. There were also a couple of dishes I hadn't tried before included, which were incredible: green beans and another spicy lentil dish. I left stuffed and happy. I was especially pleased when the check came: unlike Demera, Selam doesn't force you to pay more money for the same food just because you have a dining companion. Huge point in Selam's favor here. Selam's one big weakness at the moment is atmosphere. For some reason, they decided to use a bunch of bright white bulbs which make the interior feel much colder and more sterile than it ought to. Simply swapping those out for some warmer colored bulbs would make a huge difference. Aside from the baffling lighting choices, you can tell that they're putting in some effort: they play lively Ethiopian music and have cultural decorations everywhere--however, the walls are very tall and there is still way too much bare wall space. Just hanging some colorful fabrics around the walls (or even better, draping between the walls across the ceiling) would help a lot, too. Overall, this place is an excellent alternative to Demera for day-to-day Ethiopian needs, especially if you are on a budget. Vegetarian options: Numerous and tasty vegan options; see main review.
