Been wanting to try Formosa for a long time. Probably driven by this place a million times and low key thought it was a mexican restaurant. It’s in fact Chinese American cuisine that does not disappoint. We did family style and got a bunch of plates including Pot Stickers, Short Rib Noodles, Orange Chicken, Spicy Dan Dan Noodles and the Walnut shrimp. All dishes were amazing, especially the Spicy Dan Dan Noodles and Walnut Shrimp. I would also recommend the El Vencido cocktail. The service was excellently provided by Olivia and the vibes and atmosphere were thematically asian inspired.
Food was a bit heavy but very tasty and unique. Service was great too. Only downside was the venue is very loud and there is no way to call the restaurant if you need to talk to a human there or happen to leave prescription sunglasses behind, which I definitely didn’t
Formosa needs to live up to the scenery and history. Maybe the food was never good. There's two good things. #1 drinks are great #2 the restaurant looks like a speakeasy cool vibe. But the food is where they drop the ball.
Delicious food! Loved the cucumbers, cauliflower, and soup dumplings! The service was great!
It's a great place, the atmosphere is such that you want to come back and you would come back if the food was delicious. We ordered three dishes and didn't like any of them. Even in cheap Chinese places it is much tastier. They do not follow the rules of cooking, the sauce is burnt, the shrimp is dry.....so sad
My friend and I decided to grab drinks and it was the best night out I've had in a while because the staff was top-notch! People in LA can often be pretentious and unfriendly, even if they're serving you. At Formosa, I felt more cared for than any other LA restaurant I've been to – the staff was SO kind. We had to stand to wait for a seat to open at the bar and we were anxious that we were in the way of the servers but every single one of them reassured us we were good and struck up friendly conversation. Jared went the extra mile to make us feel welcomed, checking on us frequently and eventually sneaking us bar stools from the back. The drinks were delicious and our bartender surprised us with a free round on them!!! As a local, I now have a new favorite spot that makes me feel like part of the Hollywood community. If you're looking for a fun night, go on Thursday for karaoke! It's a judge-free environment you can let loose in and the old Hollywood charm is magical.
The most kind staff! It’s no wonder this place is busy - my friend and I had the best time here and I look forward to returning. Special shout out to Jared who made us feel welcome and to our bartender in the back room who was so lovely - I think her name started with an E. 10/10
