Let me first preface this by saying I’d been going to Zach’s Famous since I was 13 years old. I’m now 30. I grew up and went to school in the area and the food court in Millbourne Mall has seen a lot of business turnover. All of the neighbouring food establishments seemed to either change ownership or close down or rebrand as frequently as the seasons changed. Zach’s was the one constant and there’s a reason it has lasted and prospered. Exceptional quality and great customer service. Original ownership sold about a year ago. The new owner did a reasonably good job keeping things the same. About two weeks ago or so ownership changed again and this is where things go downhill. First off, I’d been ordering the same thing for several years. Today the same thing I’d been getting for years cost me significantly more. Instead of freshly shaved meat, now it’s pulled from a container and thrown on a grill with the pita thrown on top of the grilling meat. Problem with this is it dries out the meat and makes the pita soggy at the same time. The donair itself was far too big and any bite taken was either all meat or all vegetables because of the size. No blend of flavours. It wasn’t good. The meat itself tasted like dog food, I don’t know if he’s still using Athena or if it tasted bad because it was over cooked and dried because of the grilling. And who knows how long it was sitting the metal container on the grill before being grilled. Half way through the donair, because the pita was soggied by being cooked on top of the meat the thing completely disintegrated. Couldn’t hold it anymore. What a wasteful mess. The sauce which was my favourite part of the first generation donairs tastes like the recipe has changed. It’s tastless now. The fries are different and tasted like the oil in the fryer hadn’t been changed for a while. Only thing that was good was my Pepsi. It’s extrmely disappointing that the food is now terrible and costs significantly more. I’m very disappointed that after 17 years of what was one of the best donairs in town, I will not be back. The new owner decided to take a community loved treat meal and ruin it. Worst part is that when I asked about the price increase, the new owner lied and said prices did not increase. After ordering the same thing regularly for years you remember what you pay because it’s the same number coming up every time. Very disappointing to see new ownership not only has ruined an exceptional product, but also brings a lack of integrity to the table. If you loved the way your donair tasted before ownership sold, don’t bother wasting your money as you’ll be very let down.
