If I judge by flavor alone this place is above and beyond. Online menu did not reflect in person menu but what I did order was completely authentic to Jamaica.
Stepping into Wah Gwaan Jamaican Kitchen & Bar is akin to a direct portal to the heart of Kingston, where the vibrant spirit of Jamaica comes alive through its culinary delights. On my recent visit, the establishment not only captivated me with its ambiance but left an indelible mark through its gastronomic offerings, particularly the jerk chicken plate and the pineapple upside-down cake. The jerk chicken plate was a masterclass in balance and flavor. The chicken itself, succulent and tender to the fork, was adorned with a spice blend that spoke of generations of culinary heritage. This wasn't just heat for the sake of heat; it was a thoughtful composition of spices that danced on the palate, invoking a smile with each bite. The smokiness, a hallmark of authentic jerk cuisine, was present and perfectly paired with the subtle char of the grill. Accompaniments on the plate complemented the chicken beautifully, creating a harmonious blend of tastes and textures that transported me straight to the island's vibrant beaches and bustling streets. Dessert was a delightful journey with the pineapple upside-down cake. This dish was a testament to the chef's prowess in transforming simple ingredients into a dessert that was both comforting and sophisticated. The cake was moist, with the pineapple lending a sweet, tangy counterpoint to the caramelized sugar. It was a brilliant close to the meal, encapsulating the essence of Jamaican warmth and hospitality. Wah Gwaan Jamaican Kitchen & Bar excels not only in its culinary creations but in its ability to create an experience that feels both authentic and welcoming. The staff's attentiveness and the kitchen's dedication to authentic Jamaican flavors make it a must-visit for anyone seeking to indulge in the rich tapestry of Caribbean cuisine. As a food critic who has traversed many culinary landscapes, Wah Gwaan stands out as a beacon of Jamaican gastronomy, inviting one and all to revel in its flavors, one delicious bite at a time.
Authentic Jamaican food in an excellent location. It's pretty chaotic and loud inside, but they have some neat outdoor seating.
It's a little bit pricey, but worth every penny.... you ever heard the saying , "You get what you pay for." Excellent, great job, Chef
