The Grill at Torrey Pines

My boyfriend and I had such an odd, negative experience at The Grill, which is deeply unfortunate considering I've had good experiences eating here previously. The predominant issue arose when we ordered a Kentucky mule with our lunch; when the drink arrived, the ice was almost entirely melted, and the proportions of the ginger and whiskey were not even remotely close to being correct. It tasted like watered down ginger ale with far too much lime, and the bourbon couldn’t be tasted at all. We told our waitress, Lisa, that the drink was not good and requested to have it sent back. She then asked “are you aware that a Kentucky mule is made with bourbon, and not vodka? Is that why it doesn’t taste good? It’s not a Moscow mule.” Which is a not-so-subtle way of asking “do you know what you ordered? Are you incapable of reading the ingredients on the menu?” The question was incredibly condescending and unnecessary, and deeply off-putting. The other issue we encountered was the seating situation. We came here on a weekday around 3:00 and the restaurant was at ~20% capacity. We asked to sit at a table (there were at least 10 tables open on the patio) and the host informed us in a fairly rude tone that we would only be able to sit on a couch. This wasn’t a very comfortable option, and we were directly next to the host stand and awkwardly within earshot of all of the hosts conversations. When our waitress came by, we asked if there were any available tables and she said “yes of course” and we were able to choose between several different tables to sit at - it’s unclear why we weren’t given this option initially. Overall, the entire demeanor of the staff was disagreeable during our visit here, and we will not be returning despite the fact that the food was quite good and the view can’t be beat.

Great setting

One word to describe this place…OUTSTANDING! The food is beyond delicious! In fact during my husband and I’s stay we ate here twice and the exact same meals, the sloppy joes! The second time I arrived it was during the dinner menu and they went out of their way to still make our sloppy joes even though it wasn’t even on the menu! The customer service is phenomenal. The location is gorgeous. The environment is stunning. HIGHLY Recommend staying at The Lodge and eating at The Grill~ of course try the sloppy joes, I promise you won’t regret it!!!! As tourists from Toronto, we are amazed at the services at the Grill @ Torrey Pines. Everyone working at The Grill and the course are friendly and helpful. I wish I can give them 10 stars out of 5. They all made you feel welcomed and comfortable there. As you can see from the pictures, the storm is coming and I was being nosy about the restaurant. The greeters @ the Grill said to me don't worry, stay dry and then happily passed me the menus when I asked if I can look at their menus. The lunch menu look great and we can't resist to try out their food. Joshua, our server, is the smartest and best server. We had only ordered 1 appetizer (Mahi Mahi Ceviche) & a sandwich (Wood Grilled "Cardiff Crack" Sandwich) from the lunch menu. We then requested to try the complimentary bread and butter. Joshua is happy with our choices and as you can see from the pictures, he even asked the kitchen to split our sandwich with salad into two. We are shocked at how thoughtful he is and being so nice.
