Omakase style sushi bar which is absolutely delicious. Reservations are a must; each round has space for about eight people. Two chefs prepare one piece after another to be enjoyed. Best ginger I’ve ever had at a sushi place! You can get green tea but they serve no alcohol or drinks! So bring your own bottle - they supply a silver ice cooler :) we paid around 280$ for a great evening. We didn’t say it was my birthday dinner but the women next to me got this amazing sushi cupcake creation with a little candle (and her bday was 3 days prior - so a little jealous ;) ) - tell them!

We recently visited Tanoshi, renowned for its amazing omakase experience. Indeed, the culinary journey was impressive, showcasing an array of beautifully crafted dishes with exquisite flavors. However, our appreciation for the meal was overshadowed by an unforeseen personal emergency involving my wife, which required us to leave abruptly. Regrettably, during this stressful moment, the response from the staff, especially one lady, was far from sympathetic. Their insistence on settling the bill immediately, coupled with a distinctly rude demeanor, added to our discomfort and urgency. I felt like I was forced to pay $300. This is unheard of and something I did not expect as it isn’t mentioned anywhere. It was disheartening to encounter such a lack of understanding and compassion, particularly in a situation that called for empathy and quick action. While the food was exceptional, the inflexible and unsympathetic customer service significantly tainted our overall experience at Tanoshi. This was the worst we have ever been treated in our lives, it was inhumane

Heard a lot about this place online and was excited to give it a try. I’ve been to a lot of omakases in the city (Shinn West, Sushi On Me, Sushi by N, etc) and this one was casual to the point where I was uncomfortable in atmosphere. Not to say I don’t like a more relaxed environment! I was in the 7:30 spot and the moment I stepped in, it reeked of stale bleach mingled with humid human sweat. You’re able to BYOB and the waitress was super nice but the chef was both rude and… blatantly unsanitary. He ignored my questions about where the fish was from and barely acknowledged us. For the unsanitary bit, He had chopped up some tuna meat for a course and upon eating my sushi in one bite, I pulled out a bone the length of a long fingernail. I wiped it out my plate (NOT the plate where he puts the fish) but my own. As soon as he saw the bone, he reached over, plucked it up, laughed, and then wiped it ON THE BOARD WHERE HE WAS PREPARING THE SUSHI. I was shocked. While the fish is decently fresh and the combos are interesting, the courses are often times paired and drowned by overwhelming sauces, which hinders the palette. I will not be returning. I recommend Shinn East or West

I have been to Tanoshi several times and am sad to say that my most recent visit (my first time back in several years) will be my last. The sushi itself was fresh, delicious, and interesting, but the service and ambiance leave a lot to be desired. I understand there is a more casual/no frills vibe here and went in expecting that, but when you are paying $120+pp there is just a baseline level of service that I felt was lacking.

During a solo trip to NYC I decided to venture from the UWS to the UES for this small and unassuming sushi bar. The style is omakase and it was truly an experience. You are greeted at the door with your name on a list, then sat at the bar for one of only 3 seatings per night (make a reservation in advance). I met and mingled with such interesting and unique individuals it was an incredible experience. The staff were so friendly and kind. They got me to try things that were out of my comfort zone sushi wise and I was so glad they did. The perfect spot for solo travelers or a couple’s date night. If I could give this more than 5 stars I would.

I’d say this is one of the best affordable omakase spots in the city. Almost want to gate keep it but I think it’s getting quite popular lately. It is super authentic sushi - very fresh fish and the seasonings added to some of the nigiris are divine - just complements the fish’s flavor and reminds me of home a lot. The itamae san is an old Japanese guy - not very talkative but you can tell he is a shokunin san - dedicated to his craft. Also its byob and theres a liquor store next door.
