I really wanted to love these tamales; however, they were very bland. There was no spice whatsoever. I ordered chicken, pork, and cheese. They’re big tamales but there is way too much masa and not enough meat or cheese. The salsa was the best item.
On this holiday weekend traversing the Oakland hills and flatlands of Berkeley, enroute to destinations planned and discovered, this planned stop proved more credible the food reviews Tamaleria Azteca garned from the SF Chronicle. I bought six for a Jackson. Mostly a order and go venue though you could eat on the outside counter. Across is a bus stop where on this day, a bus traveler stood in the counter area making it "feel" crowded. Myself and another tamal foodie were the only other people ordering.
Highly rated spot for a reason. Very tasty and good portioned tamales. Super nice and friendly owners. Was very happy to spend my money here.
Best tamale in the Bay Area. Hands down.
