Sumu Tokyo ramen & Sushi

I went here based on the good reviews but wow, this is the worst Japanese food I've ever had. I was surprised that the rice was such bad quality. It tastes like the cheapest Chinese rice you get at a roadside stand. Total lack of care, as if the owner got the cheapest bag because we wouldn't know the difference. And it was watery, as if the people who made it had no idea about rice-to-water ratio. I've never been to a Japanese restaurant that did not serve Japanese rice. They are serious about rice yet this place is not. Also, the miso soup was really salty, again a cheap version of what it should be, and not up to Japanese standards. The potato salad was also watery and mushy and didn't not taste like the typical Japanese potato salad you usually get at a decent Japanese place. And the salmon had a lot of sweet sauce on it, like it was dumped on there. It was more sugary than the more normal soy sauce flavor. Even the atmosphere didn't make up for the fake Japanese food. Instead of silence or music, all that we could hear were Sirius radio ads over and over again. I've never been in a place that only played advertising and nothing else. It was also dirty and I wondered if I was going to get sick from the unsanitary dishes. There was nothing charming about the place; it seemed like a neglected storage space. It even smelled like old cigarettes. Neglect, apathy, and substandard food sum it up. Maybe the sushi is good but I will only go back if someone else pays. I won't be spending my money here again.

I work in the West Loop and Sumu has become my favorite sushi spot over the past 5+ years. This was originally the second location for Butterfly Sushi, which is still open on Grand. This location kept its sushi menu but added the ramen focus, which provides additional options - thus their new name. Food is always fresh and their service is always impeccable. Whether dining in or takeout (pickup or delivery), it is always a 5 star experience in every way. Highly recommended!

Great space, mediocre food, good service. Restaurant week menu is good value

The vegetable shoyu ramen and cucumber salad were ok, I've had some that were more flavorful. Loved the sweet potato Maki. Large portions. Staff was really nice and attentive except I asked for my ramen and cucumber salad to be wrapped up and because they staple the bag shut I didn't notice until the next morning that the salad wasn't in there it was just the rest of my ramen. An accident I'm sure, but make sure you check your to go bags. Overall I'd try again. But definitely with other choices.

Omg I had the Best experience here, the food is Really great. I had the spicy Karrage Ramen, gyozi and Shrimp and cheese wraps. I enjoyed every bit and I'll Definitely be back for more. My host didn't offer me a happy hour menu and I had to keep flagging her down, it would've been nice to have a polite server. The food was perfect tho.

Really decent prices and surprisingly large portions!
