What can can be better? Fabulous food, drinks, and service
This is one of the best restaurants I've been to in my life. The food, service, and atmosphere is out of this world. When I was on my trip to SF I ate here every day for a week. They have servers and wait staff checking up on you every few minutes. The managers come by to make sure the food is ok. Their attention to detail in the food and flavor is something to remember forever. This is the first restaurant I will go to when I'm back in SF. Thanks for everything, Spruce.
We celebrated our 21st anniversary at this restaurant. The hostess was very kind and kept us updated as our table was getting ready. All the folks were very courteous and kind. We loved the petite amuse-bouche and it was a delight to try out the three course meal. The beet burrata salad was delicious. My son had a carrot pasta which was different and very appetizing. The fish entree was okay, but the duck was delectable. The bread service was also good. Loved the dessert choices and the lovely pastry they presented for our anniversary. Overall a lovely experience at this restaurant. We were able to create a memorable celebration and will highly recommend this place.
The food was very good, but service was terrible. We were seated at 7:30 and offered drinks around 7:45. My friend’s champagne was brought by around 8, and got flat as we waited until 8:15 for our cocktails. No food arrived until 8:30. When bread was offered to our table, one person politely declined, clearly stating her gluten intolerance. She was not offered gluten-free bread, and we weren’t aware that it was available until much later in the meal when our server collected our bread plates and noticed her sad empty one. I feel bad for our server, who was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the menus but couldn’t make up for the rest of the staff’s shortcomings. As for the food, the carrot pasta was the highlight - an absolute must-order for as long as it remains on the menu. The faintly sweet tang of orange juice brightened the sauce, with dollops of pesto bringing nutty herbaceous richness and a beautiful color contrast. The scallops were also great. The sunchoke velouté was good. The beets and burrata were just beets and burrata. The risotto was too heavy and cheesy. The beignet dessert was recommended as a specialty, and was good (freshly fried dough always is) but uninspiring. I’ll take responsibility for that last one - I should have ordered differently, but at this price point, I suppose I was hoping that everything would be memorable.
Came for the bar, which serves a la carte dishes — delicious food with exceptional service.
The food at Spruce actually is generally very good. The burger is excellent. Some misses however: the Waldorf salad is rudimentary and unmemorable, and the omelette especially is not good. It has caviar that's completely overwhelmed by the treacly creme fraiche sauce swamping the omelette. Also the braised leaks are kinda gross.
