'Twas the Day of Saint Patrick when all through Magic City, People were wearing green, drinking colbeer, and getting litty. So a little Irish crew went on down to Avondale, Starting before noon, they planned on raising a little hell.Miss Fancy in their hands, they guzzled as they walked, But soon it was 1 o'clock and their bellies started to talk. Now this isn't a story where we talk about Santa Clause, These boys bought their own presents and they got them from Saws. They would sleep on the couch, couldn't make it to bed, But visions of pork n greens still danced in their heads. They met a couple ol boys from up north of the border, Real Canadians, eh, ran into some barbecue hoarders. They asked for some suggestions while they stared at the menu,Well that's a tough question, depends how much grub you want in you. Now Pulled Pork! Now French Fries! Now Baker! Now Chicken! On Okra! On Collards!Pork n greens I keep picking! The way they attacked their plates, I had never seen so much violence,They deepthroated those grits as they nodded in silence. If you've got a bottle of Turkey, you don't need any Pappy,I've never went to Saws Soul Kitchen, without leaving full, fat, and happy.

3 words: Pork N' Greens. Love it. More room would be a plus but, it's Saw's!

12:45 on a Saturday, my husband and I had lunch here. My choices were fried catfish, green beans and mixed greens. The catfish was slightly warm in the center and cool everywhere else. A lot of ketchup allowed a few bites of the center to be consumed. It also had a STRONG muddy taste. The green beans had so much salt that they were unidentifiable as green beans. The mixed greens were blandly average. The hush puppies were ok. My husband had meatloaf, whole kernel corn, and butter peas. The meatloaf had a bit too much  bread crumbs and it lacked any seasoning flavor. The red sauce on top had a strong cinnamon flavor that was unpleasant. The corn was tough like it had been frozen too long, or was old, or was cooked too long. Flavor-wise it lacked any at all and was a bit pasty. The butter peas had the greatest potential but over salting drowned their flavor.

4.5 stars.  This is what you'd expect from a true Alabama BBQ and soul food joint.  A small ramshackled building in a slightly seedy part of town (I'm reminded of Arthur Bryant's in Kansas City) that you'd drive by unnoticed if you weren't looking for it.  We stopped by on our way from BHM to Tuscaloosa on our first trip to Birmingham.  Boy, were the Yelpers right about this place.  I had the day's special of BBQ Pork on turnip greens, with cheesy grits and onion rings.  I'm not a fan of cheese and onions, but I devoured all of it.  They were that good.  You have to be patient if you come at a busy time (we were there for lunch).  But the line moved quickly and we snagged a table inside where there was AC, instead of sitting outside at the picnic tables.  It's great that the drinks come with the meal.  We also had the fried okra sides and they were out of this world good.  I only wish I had this kind of BBQ near me.  But then again, I probably can't resist eating this stuff everyday and will die an early death.  So I'll stop by when I'm back in BHM again.
