This place is full of potential! The location and style of the restaurant is great! I love the decor and style of the restaurant but the food is just okay. I've had better food literally everywhere else that sells Mexican food. The Cali fries were okay but for 16!! It made them suck for that cost and the portion size is lacking for a price in that range. Also got chips and salsa that was actually pretty good solid 3.9/5 stars for those. The Asada Street tacos were like a 3 star. The lady at the front gave good service but there was a man that asked if we wanted some green or red salsa and we said we'd like both please and he never came back with them maybe that would have upped the taste of the tacos but we will never know. The horchata was fine at first but has a funky after taste. Lastly there is a gratitude that is automatically taken from your card.
I want to address the catering service I received for My Oct 2023 wedding. Well we paid about a little shy of 9K, YES 9000 dollars, for mediocre tacos, for catering for 275 people, only about 250 arrived, with about 50 being kids, and about a third of those arriving after the serving window. So much miscommunication! They had a change in director, however who's running the company? It's the COMPANY’s RESPONSIBILITY TO COMMUNICATE their guidelines. I booked early 2023, didn't get a contract until 8/2023 which pretty much only outlined payment, and finance, and I believe catering time. -received several complaints from multiple guests that servers were very rude. -THEY RAN OUT OF TOPPINGS FOR THE TACOS ( I paid almost 9k) - Under the impression they ran out of food, at the cut off time I had a guest who went up to get her plate of food and was denied, and the server stated to my husband who went to ask for an explanation that she gave her last “personal plates away”, for this reason I didn't even bother asking them to keep serving, I figured we ran out of food, and I would have payed for another hour of serving, well turns out that “could” have been an option if it was something I agreed to in advance, but it wasn't, and They weren't prepared to keep serving, they didn't bring extra lighter fluid, which is so weird to me.. You'd think they would be prepared to make some more money, to try and keep serving. They are a catering company after all. - after SPEAKING TO THE OWNER she stated they ran out of plates not food??? Not even all my guests were there. How did you run out of plates???? I could have brought more if that was the case. -They were not allowing guests to receive plates of food for other people. -My uncle tried to get my grandmother's plate for her because she had a bad knee and couldn't stand in line for food, he was told, my grandmother needed to be in line to get her plate of food. All in all, it was miscommunication on top of miscommunication. I'm not upset at how they run things, I'm more upset at the lack of conversation and the way they handled the situation thereafter. The director of catering Rachel was so apologetic and understood how saddened I was for that I am appreciative. The owner however was quick to dismiss any concern with either an excuse or a condescending comment, I was left so upset at our conversation and the things that were discussed, no apology from her at all. She ended up only refunding our 500 dollar deposit. All in all this took away so much from my wedding day, our saving grace was we hired a mini pancakes caterer and they were the rave of the entire night and people forgot about the mediocre food and horrible service, SO HIRE DOLCE CRAVINGS FOR MINI PANCAKES, and unless there's a huge change in ownership of retro taco I DO NOT RECOMMEND THEM. Horrible experience.
The food isn't bad although I think it's a bit expensive for just a couple tacos. What brings it down from a solid 4-star experience is the atmosphere and service compared to what you are paying for. Why is a 20% gratuity automatically added at the register for an order at the counter experience? There were 4 of us. That's usually something you see for large parties at a sit down restaurant. And then you are prompted to leave a tip on top of that. I wonder how many people leave a healthy tip on top of that without realizing it's already been added.
