Owner Paul Canales closed Occitania on March 10, 2023 and the restaurant is no longer in business.
I stopped in on Wednesday evening, the day after Valentines. I sat at the lovely bar and order a cocktail and dinner. I ordered the Steak Frites $54-56. When it arrived it looked unappealing, dry and small for the price. Even the Bearnaise couldn’t help this piece of flavorless meat. Not one asked if the food was ok. I did my best not to eat most of it. I Tipped the bartender and decided wait a while before returning to Occitania.
Went here for Valentine's Day with my honey. Things didn't go as planned. Our table and the ambiance were delightful...(hence the stars). That is until our server entered our night. She basically looked like someone who was forced to work on this night and had an attitude to go with it. Right off the bat we ordered 4 dishes and while not too complicated our server attempted to memorize the order because she said writing it down takes too long.... BAD IDEA! We ordered duck pate and instead we got pork rilettes....yuck! When we mentioned the order was incorrect our server said "Oh sorry" and walked away. No replacement, just a simple shrug and a sorry. I also felt the restaurant lacked professionalism as almost everyone was wearing their street clothes and there was no uniform or anything to identify a staff member that works there. I have lived in Oakland for 12 years and the experience was unlike any other restaurant I've been to in the Bay area. Based on their prices and attitude I felt this was unacceptable and will not be returning.
Dietary restrictions: The kitchen accommodated simple modifications due to dietary restrictions, ie. true allergies.
Genuine Feench food well prepared. The space is large and the ambience is elegant, with high ceilings so things aren't too noisy. Menu is limited but offers plenty of choices. No gimmicks, no frills - just good food and good service.
The escargot were sad, and the butter didn't do it any favors. The French onion soup, however, was delicious and would be recommended. Steak frities were a typical bistro fair, but not worth a fine dining cost. It was decent, but not amazing. The burger was smothered in mustard, and it overpowered the whole sandwich. The fries were just right on both dishes. The server was friendly but not very attentive. The timing of items from the bar was sluggish. We would probably not be coming back again.
