I recently celebrated my wife's birthday at Mud Hen Water on Wai’alae, and it was an exceptional experience. We opted for the j Ludovico fried chicken and the big 5 veggie sampler, which included breadfruit, salads, pohole, and roasted 'n raw carrots. Each dish was executed flawlessly, with the chicken being juicy and bursting with flavor, and the veggies delicate yet delicious. The miso-butterscotch bread pudding for dessert was a sweet and savory delight, providing the perfect conclusion to our meal. Overall, Mud Hen Water exceeded our expectations and made my wife's birthday truly memorable. Highly recommended for any special occasion or simply for a fantastic dining experience. The service was also excellent.
Friendly staff. Amazing food. Chill environment. Hash is a must. Kimchi is perfectly pickled and not too spicy. The jam and fresh bread is delightful! The pancakes are shareable and perfectly cooked.
The food is what gives this place a 5!!! It's been the best meal I've had in Oahu since I've been here this past year. Every dish was phenomenal; start to finish; appies, mains, to the desserts. The service started a little slow, as it took about fifteen minutes to get our drink order in. Might just be staffing issues? After that however everything fell into place nicely. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for local Hawaiian-infusion farm-to-table eats. I'll be definitely coming back!!!
We came here after finding out the chicken long rice croquettes were mentioned in the New York Times as one of the best dishes of 2023. I thought the croquettes were very good while hubby thought they were exceptional. Both of us agreed the kama (fish collar) and miso-butterscotch rice pudding were excellent. I really liked the buttered ulu while hubby thought they were okay. We agreed the fried chicken had great flavor, it was juicy, but lacked a crispy skin. Loved the friendly yet homestyle service! Also liked the decor and feel of the place. This may sound like an oxymoron, but I felt the decor was a mix between classy and grungy. It was definitely island with the plyboard wall coverings, indoor/outdoor seating, and street art. Overall, we enjoyed the meal and found the prices to be comparable to the quality of the food and service.
Saw in Bon Appetit. Chef Ed Kenney. Try stuffed croquettes with chicken long rice and mussels cooked with Portuguese sausage. Saw in eater. Mud Hen Water offers Hawaiʻi-born chef Ed Kenney’s modern interpretation of traditional Hawaiian food. Known for his work at Town Restaurant and Mahina & Sun’s, here he manages to appeal to current dining trends while fully respecting and doing justice to the tradition of Hawaiian ingredients with standouts like the Yaki o Pa'i 'ai (a multicultural treatment of pa‘i ‘ai, steamed, pounded taro), local Kualoa Ranch oysters, baked Moloka‘i bananas with curry butter, and grilled he'e (octopus) with lūʻau leaves. Brunch is one of the best meals here, offering dishes including a biscuit with mapo gravy, and the seaboard, like a charcuterie and cheese plate, but with an assortment of cured, locally caught fish
OMG this is a fabulous spot for fun, creative food that centers around what’s fresh and locally grown. This is one of a very few places in the world that has vegetarian offering that I actually crave. Nothing felt like it was missing the meat. And the meat dishes we did have were equally spectacular. Getting out to the islands is quite a treat, and I feel this pull to always try new places. But this place… so good I think I’ll have to come back next time I’m in Honolulu. It’s just so worth it!
Great cocktails + ambiance. Have to try the food next time
Ever dish is a wonderful culinay surprise!
