I don't eat soul food. But my wife enjoyed the food that she ordered.
Went there today just before closing. Purchased oxtails with candied yams & rice and gravy. Excellent tasting, the gravy was delicious oxtails were falling off the bones and the candied yams were very good also. Did not really like the corn bread dressing. The hostess, Star was very friendly and welcoming. I'm from the Chi and recommend it highly. Price was right also. Looking for good food check Matthews at 2222 W. Rosecran out. They also have delivery. Thanks Star, Mickey Parking: Many
I'm not one to write negative reviews about small black-owned businesses, but I’m just here to remind everyone to always check their food before eating it. Despite finding MOLD on the bread in my catfish po'boy, I'm giving this place a 3-star rating because the customer service was exceptional. Both the waitress and chef were very kind and accommodating.
Had breakfast there this morning everything was delicious. Found out the server was the owner. I'll definitely be back
One of Gardena's hidden treasures! I will show down next time to get a picture...

Was in the mood for Catfish & Grits (after eating my oatmeal smh). Matthews delivered hot fish and creamy grits! Portion was right (2 fish fillets,). Food was HOT and FRESH : ) 2 cents: I see a lot of reviews complaining about the lack of salt in the food. I do agree (my grits were especially were “under” seasoned)… However, that was fine with me Nothing ruins food faster than TOO MUCH SALT!!! : l I like “new school” soul food that doesn’t kill you, lol… We as folks have to remember, too much sugar & salt is what took out Big Mama LEG!!!
