As a resident of the building, we have spent thousands of dollars at Matsuhisa. And up until the last visit we were very pleased overall. Although the quality on some items declined slightly, and the portions appear smaller, there was overall satisfaction. That said, my last visit a few weeks ago was extremely disappointing. For the first time when sitting at the bar, a place I have sat at dozens of times, I was told I would be displaced if I was not on the wait list; even though the bar was not full! First time ever sitting at 2 empty seats, I get told that right off the bat. The bartenders there should have remembered I am a frequent customer who has always been kind and generous with tips. But they disregarded my existence, and I decided to close my tab after one round of drinks. Then, I thought, hmmm... why I don't I get on the wait list for the bar. I tell the manager I would like to get on the wait list for the bar, and sure enough, we got seated.... AT THE BAR! It may be some semantical rule they had, but it was a slower Tuesday night, and it was disappointing to get treated that way. The servers treated my rudely thereon after; but I could not help but laugh at how less and less crowded the bar got to where there were 6 seats in a row moments after we got "off the wait list." The manager was so rude and disrespectful and I was being kind the whole time in explaining how after 20+ visits I had never been treated so rudely. He must have been new. The sushi is good but does not meet the value of the pricing. Unless you are getting all the top level orders off the special menu, you are getting AVERAGE sushi. Smaller rolls overall, the lamb has dropped, but I will say drinks are always SUPERB. There is one really nice bartender there but the other guys who are normally there were just simply out of line. There are plenty of excellent sushi places to go to such as Sushi Den (which is much more modern and pleasing inside, and Hapa to name a couple. These places use more fish in their rolls, cost a lot less, and they don't have the arrogance that precedes Matsu. I think Matsu had an overhaul with their chefs, and are maybe relying on the name and celeb status. But if it was so good, where's the Michelin Star??? Be smart with your money. You'll thank your wallet!
