Lula Mae

Sometimes fun is enough… Lula Mae delivers an enjoyable evening out, even if the food falls short. While I'm not familiar enough with Cambodian cuisine to judge its authenticity, the flavors were a delight overall, though its popularity may have challenged the kitchen's ability to properly execute. The Tokyo Mae cocktail, was painfully sweet – almost undrinkable, the tuna "crispy" rice lacked any crispy-ness, and the fried rice was mushy - resembling more a chunky mashed potato. Yet, the flavors remained enjoyable despite these shortcomings. So, would I go back? Yes... The atmosphere was boisterous and festive, complemented by fun, genuine service. They went above and beyond with a slice of staff cake for our friend's birthday, adding a truly sweet touch to the night. Standout dishes included the flavorful beef carpaccio and tender short ribs – proving that Lula Mae has potential far beyond the experience we had. We also enjoyed the cha kway with tom yum butter. If they can tighten up the kitchen execution, this spot could easily become one better restaurants in all of North Brooklyn.

Vegetables, spices and nut based proteins combined, cooked and presented in an imaginative, colorful, surprising, delightful way. I didn’t know Cambodian cuisine, I’m a convert!

Vibes are great. Staff is super kind. I think if your vegetarian, this spot doesn’t hit super hard but if not, you’ll enjoy some pretty sweet meals.

We really wanted to like this place and had been looking forward to coming here for a while. We used to love the restaurant that was here before and had high hopes but unfortunately Lula Mae missed the mark. Upon arriving, the hostess sat us at a small table directly next to the door. It was early and the place was empty. I asked if we could move to another table and she said no, although we had a reservation and this felt odd as it was empty. She was very rude and condescending towards us and we were left at the table next to the cold door. The waitress then came and moved us to another table which was very nice of her but frankly we felt uncomfortable at the hostesses attitude towards us. We then ordered drinks and a few different items from the menu. The drinks were okay but every item we tried was not good. The oysters were a salt bomb and tiny, while the fried chicken was pink and undercooked. The prices and portions of this place felt out of touch and missed the mark of the neighborhood. Wishing Villa Pancho was still there.

How are they not 5 stars full on? Every time I eat here the whole table is moaning over every single bite we take of every dish. My absolute must haves: the bone marrow and the oysters. I could eat 5 plates of each and a side of crab fried rice, be hit by a car after and die a happy woman.
