I had this BBQ twice in one weekend when visiting Charleston about 6 months ago. I think of this food often. It was incredible! Also, I am very GF and the staff was so mindful (new prep station, glove utensils). I cannot recommend it enough!!
I know what you’re thinking, long lines, people willing to wait for expensive meat… must be the Best BBQ in Charleston and maybe even SC. Well this Texan ordered an old fashioned sliced brisket sandwich, corn pudding, margarita and banana pudding. Verdict? Meh. Meat was dry and chewy. Bark was over set and bland. Lots of smoke flavor and large ring, but no fat left in the meat. Felt like I was chewing a steak. And without the fat, there was no flavor so I had to drown it in their very good red sauce to make it edible. Oh and the bun? Not toasted and no butter. What’s going on?!? That said the sides were top notch. Great flavor and consistency, rich, good portions and the banana pudding may be the best I’ve had anywhere. Margarita was overly sour and not sweet, I’d suggest different limes if this was a mix. Jose Cuervo premix at Walmart is better. Not a Texas Marg. To sum it up, Lewis must have been on the sides at Franklins because he forgot to focus on the meat. In Texas we are meat first and always, sides to change the flavor up. This is supposed to be a comfort food reminding me of home and with how much I had to chew, my jaw is anything but comfortable. Oh lastly, vibes are great here, friendly staff, and I’d say more people leave here thinking about the atmosphere and unfortunately equate that with a good meal. On to the next place!
