Everything had a burnt flavor to it. I'm not sure what was going on in the kitchen but something needs attention. This is a great place with a great atmosphere.

Our new favorite place! The best steak we’ve ever had - and we eat a lot of steak! The food was so delicious. The only thing I’d change is homemade bread in the baskets instead of the dinner rolls….class it up a bit. Other than that everything was so over the top exceptional. Yes it’s pricey, but priced right for the quality. The atmosphere is beautiful and the wait staff attentive. I had to get a special note for my leftovers to claim them. So glad you’re here!

A most incredible ambiance, and beautiful atmosphere. We had the filet mignon, and lobster. The filet had a beautiful smokey aroma, and taste. Wonderful desert! The staff was attentive, and very pleasant, a wonderful experience! We were getting ready to pay our bill, and to top off our wonderful night the waiter told us, "It was all taken care of by someone! " I have no idea who paid our bill, but wish I knew! It was one of the most wonderful surprises, and so kind! Thank you! Hopefully the kindness comes back to you in many ways! Thank you

My partner and I were in town visiting Bozeman from Nashville for the weekend. We wanted to have a nice dinner out on Saturday night, so we made a reservation at J.W. Heist. The entire experience was underwhelming. Our server came by to take our drink orders, explained the menu a bit and gave us a couple minutes to decide on apps & entrees. When she came back, I ordered the Beef Short Rib. First disappointment of the night - was told they were out of the short rib. Usually in an upscale dining establishment, they tell you before you even look at the menu if they are out of something. Okay, no big deal. My partner and I ended up getting the $65 Filets (medium rare). I got the mashed potatoes on the side, and my partner ordered the smashed fingerling potatoes for her side. This place makes a huge deal about cooking their steak with a wood fire, to the point where its almost pretentious. Our steaks came out and the presentation was just... sad. A mediocre looking piece of steak on a white plate. My mashed potatoes looked like what you'd find frozen at the grocery store. My partners fingerling potatoes were in fact NOT smashed, and came with an extremely cheap tasting ketchup/mayo sort of sauce. Now on to the steaks - the main attraction. What an absolute disappointment. No flavor to be found whatsoever. In Nashville we are spoiled by amazing steakhouses - so we know our steaks. Our steaks at J.W. Heist came out lukewarm, and looked off. My partner made it about halfway through hers before quitting. It felt like a huge slap in the face considering the $65 price tag for just the steak alone. Now - I do not mind paying for something high quality, but this was not high quality. Very far from it. No real taste, not seasoned, and cold. Also, not quite sure what all the fuss they make about cooking over a wood fire. If it genuinely improves the taste, cool, but it simply did not. There were some decent aspects of the restaurant - the atmosphere and vibe is cool, and well thought out. Service was decent besides the out of stock situation. Apps were okay. Drinks were okay. All in all, I can't recommend J.W. Heist. It just wasn't good, and didn't feel worth the price. Nothing feels worse than not getting what you pay for. We do plan on coming back to Bozeman because it was such a fun time, but Heist will not be on our list of places to visit. Pretty fun name for a restaurant.

While the ambiance and service are worthy of a fine dining establishment, the food is a little underwhelming for the price. The wine list offers a wide variety and some nice finds, but they are significantly marked up as much as double what they sell for retail. As for the food, they had a lot of flaws in execution. The blue crab bisque had a richness and subtle flavor but was starting to break. The creamed spinach had too much cheese on top, and the fingerling potatoes were very greasy. The tomahawk steak was to temp but lacked flavor, and the fat was not seared enough to render the flavor into the meat. Dessert was excellent the creme brulee was rich and creamy and the baked alaska was a unique twist on a classic with pistachio cake and a huckleberry ice cream the meringue was smooth and fluffy and the kirsch liqueur flambee was a nice presentation. For this level of a restaurant we expected better.
