I visited Suroor/Junoon restaurant located as the anchor store on the corner of Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Shake Rag Road. As we entered, the decor and ambience immediately caught our attention. Dim lights cast a warm glow, accompanied by soft music that set the tone for a delightful dining experience. The spacious dining hall was designed to accommodate large groups, which was a positive sign. Before our visit, we had the chance to speak with Bilal over the phone, who was not only polite but also helpful in addressing our questions and concerns. This initial interaction set a positive tone for our expectations. Opting for the buffet priced at $15.99 per person, we were presented with a selection of 13 items. However, it was notable that the buffet featured more economical options, lacking some of the more premium dishes like nihari, paratha, or boneless chicken dishes. While the spread covered a range of items, the taste was unfortunately underwhelming. Most of the dishes fell within the realm of mediocrity, failing to evoke any extraordinary flavors. The tandoori chicken tikka and fried chicken managed to stand slightly above the rest, offering a better taste profile, although not quite reaching the realm of greatness. The buffet lineup included white rice, daal tarka, chanay, veggie bhujia, chicken corn soup, chicken pulao, beef haleem, beef qorma, chicken jalfrezi, goat paya, fried chicken, chicken tikka, and naan. While the selection was diverse, it was important to note that only one grilled item was available. The absence of beloved dishes like nihari, chicken tikka masala, and other boneless chicken options was a disappointment, especially for those seeking a more varied experience. Accompanying the buffet items were salad, raita, kheer, an orange fruity drink, and chai. However, the raita had an unpleasant odor, and the kheer failed to meet our expectations in terms of flavor and texture. The service during our meal was commendable, with two attentive staff members readily available to cater to our needs (Imran and Sana). The efficient service added a positive aspect to the overall dining experience. On the financial front, while the buffet seemed reasonably priced, glancing at the regular menu revealed exorbitant prices for the a la carte items. This aspect raised concerns about the restaurant's value proposition, especially when considering the lackluster taste of the buffet offerings. Also since most people don’t tip (or don’t tip well) in desi restaurants, an automatic service charge was added to cover the efforts of the staff (12%). They were transparent about this when I asked to tip the staff, and I was happy to pay since the service earned it. This place holds promise with its appealing ambiance, accommodating space, and polite staff. However, the true essence of a dining experience lies in the flavors presented on the plate. Regrettably, the buffet's less expensive selection of items failed to impress, leaving us with a sense of dissatisfaction. While the staff and ambiance did their part to create a welcoming atmosphere, the lack of exceptional taste ultimately overshadowed these positive aspects. As much as we appreciate the efforts put into the overall experience, it's the taste that lingers in memory, and in this regard they left us wanting more.
