I've tried so many ramen spots in Portland and many of them come off as cheap and inauthentic. Not Hapa, though. They're consistently great and occasionally add something to the menu that will also, without fail, be incredible. Frankly, it's my favorite ramen in Portland.
I never really understood where people paid so much for Ramen until I had the G Ramen here and it is honestly, so amazing! Can’t recommend it enough. Will be back many times.
My favorite ramen spot in Portland!
Disappointed with myself for missing the Ramen place in little Tokyo(LA), this was to satiate my craving. It really hit the spot. Popped in just before the shut down for their lunch/dinner reset, and we were the only customers. This place looks like a modern ramen shop, with open kitchen and counter bar seating. I ordered the tonkastu at the recommendation of the staff. It arrived in a rich, flavorful but not too thick or thin broth. Coated the well cooked noodles nicely for that authentic slurp. Huge chunks of crispy pork belly and soft boiled soy egg completed it. I would say the broth was on the salty side, but isn't ramen always a little salty? This made my earlier fomo go away.
The service was excellent. I was practically the only person there. The staff was friendly. The atmosphere was not warm. But it's a cold blustery day and the door was a little drafty. It'd be nice if there was some kind of heat source inside here to make it feel cozy. I know that's difficult with an open kitchen because it might be an overheating for the cooks. In terms of the ramen itself, I have to say that I did not have the authentic noodles and had their gluten-free version. Their gluten free version was made out of tofu, which I'm not crazy about on principal, but it actually had quite a good and interesting texture. Kind of reminiscent of sweet potato noodles without the transparency. Their broth was tasty but vinegary. It did not have a tremendous amount of depth. It wasn't rich in the way of fatty thickness or so on. I had the g-speciall ramen. I assume they didn't add sesame paste and that was one of the factors. But I didn't feel like it was a long steeping of a lot of different meat richness & minerality making up this broth. Perhaps I ordered the wrong broth? Definitely on the upper end of price for ramen in Portland.
Some of the best ramen I’ve had! Lots of flavor and they load up the ramen with noodles, which I really appreciate.
Such a cute spot counter service spot! The ramen was delicious but the poke nachos kind of stole the show that day for me. Instead of wonton wrappers as chips they made taro chips and it was unexpectedly delicious. I can't stop thinking about it.
