1st of all, the food was really good all except my pork loin/chop. It was way too done and dry. I do a lot of smoking, and a lot of pork when i do, they need work in that department. The pork belly was awesome. The bratwurst was awesome. The potatoes were really good, i had some of my wife's red cabbage, and it's probably the best red cabbage i have had. The major problem i had with this place and the reason they are not receiving a higher review is because of the service in a couple of areas. We went for my birthday, i have a certain cake i like so my wife surprised me and brought it for dessert. My wife called the restaurant and asked if we could bring it in beforehand, and they said sure, but did not tell us there was a $20 cake fee. The plates here are all nearly $30, so the cake fee seems a little ridiculous imo. But ok, fine, at least tell people beforehand. I would have gladly waiting til we got home and had cake at home rather than pay $20. When my wife yold the waiter, they never told us there was a cake fee, he just smirked and said enjoy like they made the cake or something. They also dont have refills on soda. I ordered a coke and he brought me a bottle. The sodas were not on the menu, and they were $5 dollars. I can get those same bottles in a 6 pack for $5 at the Mexican meat market. It was upsetting that they didn't let me know it was only bottles and that i wasn't aware it was going to cost $5. On top of that, our waiter wasn't mean, just a little passive-aggressive with the cake situation. He was, however, very monotone and not very inviting. I did run out of water twice as well. It's not a huge deal, but our bill, when all said and done, was $250 for 6 adults and 2 kids, and i guess when it costs that much i expect more. This place could have gotten 4-5 stars with a few considerations and kindness. Other than my pork chop, the food was really good. I dont enjoy leaving lower reviews, but i have to be honest.
I have been traveling to KC since 2014, and I never realized there was a restaurant next door to Jack Stacks. I honestly thought it was the same place. I am glad I stopped in there to check it out. The place atmosphere is amazing. The staff were friendly and inviting. The food was served swiftly. The beer and wine selection was awesome. For my meal, I had the weekly special, the steak with potatoes. Let me tell you that steak was amazing. Caramelized sauce adds flavor to the perfect steak! The only suggestion I have for this meal is to cook the potato a little less. It seemed a little over cooked. That is the only reason for the 4 stars. I would be at a loss for not mentioning the dessert. OMG! I'm definitely going to visit again on my next trip. Save me a seat.
Grunauer isn’t a place I’d go all the time, but I love going when I’m craving something “that feels like a home cooked meal”. The food is different than most places around KC. It’s all very filling, but so good. The staff do a great job of explaining and recommending dishes on the menu. Don’t let it overwhelm you. Be sure to check the daily specials before choosing what day to go! Parking: There’s a parking lot in the back shared with Lydia’s that is free if you save your receipt from the meal.
