Gene's Sausage Shop and Delicatessen

We usually love this place, but today’s experience was quite interesting. We bought a few grocery items including a piece of their plum cake. When we came home and took it out of the pastry box, it had visible mold all over. Working in the food industry, we called them right away and informed the manager, so that nobody is getting sick. His response on the phone was “thanks, we’ll check if other pieces have mold as well”. This is not how food safety should be handled and anyone with food safety certification should know about Mycotoxins in mold and how to prevent mold from spreading. Will we be back? Absolutely, but we’ll stick to all of their pre-packaged goods and the beer on the rooftop only and never touch any of their fresh items again.

The people who work here are so thoughtful, and the products are high quality. Great place for quick shopping, but also to get things for special meal prep. The cherry Wisconsin sausage and the lamb snack sausage were amazing.

A neighborhood favorite spot! Some of the best unique food and treats around plus the rooftop in the summer is AMAZING!!

The hours are trash

A Chicago gem. I love coming here to shop for the unique European items. Love enjoying a brat and a beer on the rooftop too! I do wish they offered delivery though! Definitely feels like a missed opportunity.
