What would a nice Jewish boy from the Bronx know about Senegalese food? Enough to know a FANTASTIC restaurant when he eats in one. Africa Kine's Dibe Mutton--marinated, spiced lamb chops--are simply off-the-charts. Also wonderful is the Pintade, which in Union Square Market is called "guinea fowl" and sells for $20/lb.It is as though an entire chicken were dark meat, and at Africa Kine it is roasted to perfection. And the whole fried snapper was delectable. Order two entrees for three people, because portions here are very generous. Did I mention the Joloff rice? It is magnificent. The dining room of the restaurant is simple and homey, and you see families, and girls' night out, and some men eating alone, all in a welcoming space that feels like a tavern, minus the alcohol. All three times I visited my waiter was the astute Papui (I am not spelling it correctly) whose bouncing braids crown a very smart head and a megawatt smile. He contributes no small part to what gives you the feeling you have discovered a great place at Africa Kine. Now if I could just learn to pronounce Ngalakh. HIghly recommended.
We ordered the red thiebou dieune it was excellent. The service was very slow but the food compensated for the wait time.
Always flavorful, always delicious. I’ve tried many things on their menu from Chicken Yassa to Lamb Maffe to Fried Snapper to Fataya, and I have loved every dish. The price is also great for the amount of food. Usually lasts me for dinner and lunch the next day. They take their time with their food and for very good reason. If you are looking for delicious Senegalese food with great portions, check this out for sure. Dietary restrictions: Halal
A bit too laid back African restaurant. Dishes do take a while to come out after ordering. Crispy grilled fish, good lamb and pork knuckle soup full of collagen.
Was there over the weekend with two friends, we all had the grill fish tilapia with different sides , the fish is insipid , the sweet plantain is hard and dry , 20.00 for a tilapia , that’s over price for the area. We were charged 12.5 taxes and 20% gratitude including for three persons, they called large group. Outrageous. I did address the tax issue and they changed it . I wouldn’t be going there again.
Best West African Food in NYC and I have tried most of them already. Very authentic meals and highly recommended to anyone trying African food for the first time as the style of Senegalese food is not too foreign to the American or Caribbean palate but very flavorful and hearty portions.
